CDR Special Report--Dick Scott is fond of saying that American Drug Stores is already in the 1990s. If so, it is already a much different decade for the 665-store chain than the 1980s has been. It is different because it has already journeyed some distance back to its roots, roots where store managers ran their stores. By this time next year, if all goes according to schedule, American Drug Stores will have effectively combined strong centralized management and control with an equally strong measure of store autonomy, layering the latter atop the former.
