Montreal Protocol reduces international CFC use
Part one
Over the last decade, there has been a growing scientific consensus that emissions of chlorofluorocarbons and halons are depleting the layer of stratospheric ozone that protects the earth's surface from the harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation.
Negotiations to develop a multilateral response to this threat to health and environment resulted in the 1987 Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer, which requires participating countries to effectuate a 50% reduction in production and consumption of these chemicals by 1998.
