Sep. 30--Electronic wizardry that enhances consumer gadgets also can help the legally blind see.
The latest gadget about to hit the market looks like a camcorder and uses much the same technology, but the video telescope is designed to give people with diminished vision the magnification and contrast they need to see, much as a hearing aid helps the deaf to hear.
"About 17 million people in North America have low vision, and as Baby Boomers age, that number will increase," said Brian McCarthy, chief executive of Betacom Corp., the Toronto-based company that makes the new device.
