Scientists who once devised smarter and smarter ways of killing people are now trying to find improved methods of keeping them from being killed.
The Boeing X-45A is a pilotless aircraft undergoing tests to see if it can replace the planes that need human pilots today. This is the first of a series of aircraft that already have their own acronym -- UCAVs -- for Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicles. Fully loaded, a UCAV will roll off the dealer's lot for about $15 million; that's one third the cost of a plane that needs a pilot.
