A Canadian family of four uses about one tonne of water a day -- toilet flushing, showering, dishwashing, lawn watering, etc. We would use far less if it was metered as electricity and natural gas are.
The International Joint Commission, an independent Canada-U.S. body that helps the two countries manage the Great Lakes, released a report in March 2000, which found that cities that use metering systems for water distribution consume 50% less.
