All Kaifu needs is a miracle
JAPAN'S new prime minister, Mr Toshiki Kaifu, is a wizard with words. Otherwise he has little magic. His claims to the job are that he comes from a minor faction of the ruling Liberal Democratic party; that he has been an education minister; and that he took only 14m [yen] ($100,000 in current money) in political handouts from the Recruit company, and took that modest sum before the shares-for-favours scandal had erupted. Mr Kaifu's supporters add that he neither drinks nor smokes, and prefers the company of writers and artists to that of the captains of industry favoured by most of his party colleagues.
