DETROIT - David Cone was scratched from his scheduled start Saturday because of continued shoulder discomfort, but he is expected to return to the mound tonight, when the Red Sox open a three-game series with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays at Tropicana Field.
Cone played catch before yesterday's 8-5 victory over the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park and reported that the shoulder was much improved. Manager Joe Kerrigan immediately moved him back into the rotation and pushed everyone else back a day. The recovery will allow Cone (8-6) to stay within reach of two goals: 10 wins and 25 starts.
