Every September, gardeners get to the end of the growing season and find themselves with baskets of green tomatoes. Writes Des McBride of Philadelphia:
"We feel guilty throwing them away and would like to can them for the winter. However, no one seems to have recipes except for green tomato relish.
"You'd be doing your readers a great favor if you'd publish other recipes using green tomatoes. Right now I have about a bushel on hand. Can you help?"
The first thought has to be fried green tomatoes _ slices floured or dipped in cornmeal, then fried crusty and tender.
Another option is to stew green tomatoes (blanched, peeled and chopped) ...
