WASHINGTON _ U.S. Sen. Strom Thurmond, 98, collapsed Tuesday morning in the Senate chamber, but was wheeled out of the Capitol alert and talking.
Thurmond, the nation's oldest and longest-serving senator, was admitted to Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington and was expected to stay overnight for observation, according to his spokeswoman. Doctors think dehydration may have contributed to what appears to have been a fainting spell.
The South Carolina Republican complained of feeling lightheaded and weak, then slumped forward in his second-row chair in the Senate chamber about 10:30 a.m., according to witnesses. Staff members and senators helped ...
