There has been a tendency toward thinking that chronic bronchitis only affected the elderly, but a study published in the July 2001 issue of the European Respiratory Journal (ERJ), covering almost 18,000 subjects aged between 20 and 44, shows just the opposite.

Depending on the countries, researchers report, the disease affects up to 10% of adults under 45. Although the proportion of smokers varies considerably from one country to another, the relation between cigarette consumption and the occurrence of chronic bronchitis among these young adults is practically constant.
