ORLANDO, FLA. - A new antibodybased test would simplify clinical decision-making in patients who have parathyroid hormone levels of 100-450 pg/mL on standard testing.
The findings of standard parathyroid hormone (PTH) assays are ambiguous for most patients with kidney disease. PTH levels that are below 100 pg/mL generally flag low bone turnover, and levels above 450 pg/mL usually flag high turnover. But the majority of patients with kidney disease have plasma PTH levels that are in a diagnostic gray zone of 140-450 pg/mL, said Dr. Malluche, chief of the division of nephrology, bone, and mineral metabolism at the University of Kentucky in Lexington.
