WASHINGTON -- Strom Thurmond, the oldest and longest-serving senator in U.S. history, was hospitalized yesterday after fainting at his desk on the Senate floor.
"Are they making all this fuss just for me?" the 98-year-old South Carolina Republican is said to have asked Sen. Bill Frist, R-Tenn.
Frist, a heart surgeon, was summoned from an anteroom to tend to Thurmond when he slumped over his desk in the Senate chamber shortly after 10:30 a.m. EDT, prompting the Senate to recess.
