Abnormalities in certain areas of the brain may be related to emotional disturbances such as anhedonia (the inability to experience pleasure, a feature of schizophrenia), according to an article in the July 25, 2001, issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.
Benedicto Crespo-Facorro, MD, PhD, and colleagues from the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, studied 18 people diagnosed with schizophrenia (average age 30) and 16 healthy individuals (controls - average age 29.5).
