Asda confirmed it had lost its managing director to Matalan, the upstart discount retailer, in a move likely to cast fresh uncertainties over the relationship between Asda and its American parent, Wal-Mart.
Matalan, which removed its own chief executive, Angus Monro, in April, said Paul Mason would take on the job later this year. The appointment drew a cheer from the stock market in relief that Matalan had secured a proven and successful retailer to head the group.
