Publishers Clearing House will pay 26 states a total of $34 million for stuffing mailboxes with letters that told millions of people they were winners. The settlement ends a lawsuit initiated by Wisconsin last year. Perhaps more significant than the monetary aspect of the settlement is that Publishers Clearing House agreed to stop using practices such as mailing fake checks or telling people that the Prize Patrol was going to be in their neighborhood.
