'A town ringed by blossom' seems a strange description of the great centres of the Industrial Revolution. But this was how hundreds of detached town gardens that once surrounded Birmingham were described.
Relatively little information survives about these hugely popular gardens. At the Birmingham Central Library, a fascinating map of Birmingham published in 1828 shows the town surrounded by these plots titled 'Small Gardens' spreading from the largely undeveloped acres of Edgbaston and Lee Bank to countryside beyond New Town Road just outside the town.
