When Simon Mundy produced his monograph on Elgar for the Midas Books series Illustrated Lives of the Great Composers in 1980, he felt a sense of frustration.
With a stipulated length of only 40,000 words, the 23-year-old author was aware of how much material he had been forced to omit.
