* World War I (page 2). World War took place from 1914 to 1918. The war began with the assassination of Archduke Francis Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary on June 28, 1914. Many political quarrels throughout Europe then surfaced. Germany invaded France in August of that year. Before 1915 was over, the three main Central Powers--Austria-Hungary, Germany, and the Ottoman Empire--were fighting against the Allies, which included Great Britain, Russia, Italy, France, Belgium, Serbia, Montenegro, and Japan.
