We have a longstanding interest in and commitment to the study of star images STAR and the construction of a persona both on and off screen. With Richard Dyer's Stars (bfi, London, 1979) a serious contemplation of stars was initiated, but the subject remains a relatively neglected area of critical investigation. One's response to stars is complex. On the one hand, the currency of a film star's persona is necessarily tied to the needs or pleasures which are prevalent in the culture at a particular moment; but the star's image and persona also speaks to the individual and the subjective and is closely connected to questions of identification and personal taste.
