Fort Collins has. That prosperous and polite city was founded and raised by one of the most remarkable, if most overlooked, Colorado pioneers.

Fort Collins originated in 1863 as Camp Collins, an Army camp established to protect travelers, mail service and freighting along the Overland and Cherokee trails. First built at Laporte on the Cache la Poudre River, the camp suffered a flood and, in 1864, was moved a few miles downstream to become Fort Collins. It was named for Lt. Col. William O.
