FOR months Sri Lanka has been described as being on the brink of an abyss. But, as is sometimes said about Northern Ireland, the abyss gets moved. This week Sri Lanka and India were doing their best to give it a shove.
The two countries are in conflict about the soldiers India sent into Sri Lanka two years ago in what was seen at the time as a useful effort to bring peace to the island. Sri Lanka's President Ranasinghe Premadasa now desperately wants the Indians to go. He has tried, without success, to order them out. Now he is pleading with them.
