A: The Koran (or Qur'an) is the holy book of Islam. Islam is the religion of around 1bn people in the world today.
Q: What are the Koran's origins?
A: The Koran is the word of Allah (the absolute God of Islamic faith) as revealed to the prophet Muhammad. The angel Gabriel is said to have spoken Allah's words into the prophet's ear over a period of 23 years, while he lived in Mecca and Medina. According to Muslim tradition, after each experience Muhammad recited exactly what he had been told.
