Gear pumps are frequently used to meter flow, or to pump viscous or thin fluids. In metering applications, gear pumps typically compete with diaphragm or piston pumps. All three designs make good metering pumps because they produce a consistent volumetric flowrate under given conditions. Each type can deliver repeatable flows from -0.5 to +2% of nominal flow, depending on the drive system.
