Big pharma is able to exert too much influence over clinical trials, according to 13 of the world's major medical journals.
The International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), which includes The Lancet and the British Medical Journal (Br. Med. J.), has prepared a joint editorial criticising the involvement of drug trial sponsors.
'Readers and editors are being deceived,' says the Br. Med. J. editorial. The journals are worried that research sponsors are able to exert control over trial design, access to raw data and even interpretation of the study findings. 'Authorship means both accountability and independence,' reports The Lancet.
