"A Streetcar Named Desire" retains its power, 54 years after its debut on Broadway, because it features an excruciating collision between a man and a woman who represent two outlooks on life.

Stanley Kowalski is a creature of now, a man concerned with his next beer, his next kiss, his next paycheck. Blanche DuBois is a creature of yesterday, a woman concerned with the poetic life of the old days and all the what-might-have-beens.

A third character, Stella Kowalski, resides in the center of this clash yet can remain hidden there, blurred by the thundering anger of Stanley and the unsettling weirdness of Blanche.
