TASHKENT, Uzbekistan _ This former Soviet Republic has become America's newest ally in the war against terrorism after receiving written promises of cooperation from Washington in exchange for allowing U.S. troops within its borders.
Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and Undersecretary of State John Bolton, who visited Tashkent in recent weeks, both carried letters from President Bush to Uzbekistan President Islam Karimov, said a senior Bush administration official, speaking on condition of anonymity.
