The need for continual spy satellite coverage over Afghanistan to support U.S. military operations is further evidence of the need for a military space plane, even if it must come at the expense of one of the Air Force's new fighter programs, Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-Calif.), chairman of the House Subcommittee on Space and Aeronautics, said yesterday.
In the current war with Afghanistan, if a spy satellite were to suddenly wear out or be taken out by the enemy, it could not be rapidly replaced, Rohrabacher said during a subcommittee hearing on the future of military space planes. With a space plane available those satellites could be ...
