LONG BEACH - The push to hold a major swimming event here finally became fruitful Friday.
Long Beach was named to host the 2004 U.S. Olympic Swim Trials by the USA Swimming House of Delegates. The announcement was made less than two months after Long Beach narrowly lost its bid to hold the 2005 FINA World Aquatics Championships.
In light of Tuesday's national tragedy, the announcement was made unconventionally. Chuck Wielgus, the executive director of USA Swimming, could not fly out of Dearborn, Mich. So he made the announcement by speakerphone before Long Beach's bid committee and 40 city leaders in the downtown World Trade Center.
