Neorealism and melodrama fight an entertaining tug-of-war in Gillo Pontecorvo's "The Wide Blue Road." The 1957 film, enjoying its belated U.S. release thanks to the efforts of Dustin Hoffman and Jonathan Demme, emerges from the mothballs slightly musty but surprisingly presentable.
The film is set on Italy's picturesque Dalmatian coast, where the waters are a crystal blue not seen in North America and the morality of making a living is tragically muddied.
