MOSCOW, Oct 15, 2001

Russia, responding to news of new anthrax cases detected in the United States, said Monday it is ready to help the U.S. authorities fight outbreaks of the deadly disease by providing supplies of vaccines and know-how.

Russian Health Minister Yuri Shevchenko said Russia had a stockpile of effective vaccines against anthrax and was ready to share in the techniques developed to fight the disease.

"If these cases really have a terrorist origin, we should be prepared to protect the public," Shevchenko told reporters.
