The month of August was very typical in that it ended with slow trading activity as end of the summer vacations occupied investors time. The lack of buyers and continued concern over the economy both in the U.S. and aboard contributed to the losses in the Dow Jones Industrial Average, S&P 500 and the NASDAQ. The NASDAQ closed at levels not seen, except for a few times this summer, since the end of 1998. The Dow has been faring better, maintaining a trading range between 10,000 and 11,500. Ironically, Hawaii stock overall did well in August with a more than 4 percent raise in the Hawaiian Industrial Average.
