A LIVERPOOL academic is at the forefront of a project which has raised hopes of finding life forms on another planet.
Dr Hugh Jones, a lecturer at Liverpool John Moores University, is among a team which has discovered eight new planets.
He believes the breakthrough has strengthened the likelihood of finding planets like Earth outside the solar system.
Dr Jones is part of the AngloAustralian Planet Search Team using the pounds 3.9m Anglo-Australian Telescope in New South Wales, Australia.
The astronomers, together with a team at the Keck telescope in Hawaii, has discovered eight socalled giant planets.
