Jill Lyons DeMaris was a Detroit transplant. But she touted the city's virtues with an almost evangelistic fervor that put many native Detroiters to shame.

DeMaris, who died of cancer Oct. 6, left a pretty sizable legacy, including some credit for helping to lure some major CEOs and business executives to Detroit by personally escorting them on tours to show them the best our area has to offer.

When most people had written Detroit off and were making last-person-out-turn-off-the-lights jokes, DeMaris founded Detroit Upbeat in 1977. It specialized in offering personalized orientation tours for candidates considering top business jobs in Detroit.
