Oct. 15--Jahan Brown is no fan of credit-card companies.

The sophomore Spanish student at N.C. State University knows students who were forced to drop out of school because they could no longer afford huge debts they racked up on their credit cards. And almost every morning, a marketing representative with one of the major card companies badgers Brown as she walks to class, urging her to sign an application in return for a free T-shirt or mug.
