My students noticed that most self-portraits we studied were of men, such as Henri Matisse and Vincent Van Gogh. I assured them that women drew self-portraits as well, and showed them Judith Leyster's self-portrait.
"Now, imagine that you had to draw a cartoon version of Judith Leyster. How would you draw her? Would you draw her humorous or adventurous? How would you make her personality stand out?"
"What if you could be a character in a cartoon? Would you be a villain or a superhero?"
Responses ranged from "I'd want to be Superman to help people" to "It'd be fun to be Cruella DeVil for a day, so I could be dressed up and outrageous!"
