Are researchers using your baby to test you for AIDS virus?
If you are planning to have a child, your baby could become part of a national survey monitoring the spread of AIDS.
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta anonymously tests newborns throughout the country as part of its AIDS surveillance program. By the end of this year, newborns in 44 states will have their blood tested to determine whether their mothers are infected with the AIDS virus.
Newborn testing does not reveal whether a baby is infected. Those tests tell researchers whether a mother is infected with the AIDS virus and, if so, that the baby may be infected.
