BRENTWOOD, TENN. -- Doane Pet Care Co. reported a net loss for its second quarter due to non-recurring charges taken on by its purchase of A/S Arovit Petfood in May, expenses for closure of certain facilities and a charge for an acquisition that was not completed.
For its quarter ended July 1, Doane reported a net loss of $7.1 million on sales of $210.7 million, compared with a net profit of $5.5 million on sales of $180.4 million for the same 1999 period. For its first six months, the company reported a net profit of $3.0 million on net sales of $415.2 million, compared with a net profit of $10.6 million on sales of $384.1 million for its first 1999 half.
