While the island community of Moose Factory would like to attract new industry to its area, it already has a successful operation that manufactures moose, says Chief Norm Hardisty of the Moose Cree First Nations. He is joking.
The unusual name actually comes from the fur-trade days, when the Hudson Bay posts manager was called a factor and his home called a factory. Since the trading post happened to be on the Moose River, it came to be known as Moose Factory.
Fur traders from Europe arrived in the area as early as the 1570s, setting up posts along the Moose and Albany Rivers.
