SAN JOSE, Calif. _ Federal Judge Carlos Moreno, who scratched his way out of an East Los Angeles neighborhood to attend Yale and Stanford Law School, on Thursday became the first Latino justice on the California Supreme Court in 12 years.
After a hearing in San Francisco filled with accolades, a three-member state commission endorsed Gov. Gray Davis' selection of Moreno, just the third Latino justice to serve on the state Supreme Court. In the packed chambers of California's highest court, the governor then swore in Moreno, with his wife, Christine, and two children by his side.
