This formidable study, originally a Munich thesis, is not for beginners. The reader needs to be familiar with a wide range of Brentano's works, including the devotional works, and with the landmarks of Brentano scholarship, particularly the work of Wolfgang Fruhwald on the later, post-conversion Brentano. Anyone thus forearmed will benefit immensely from the volume of detailed, thorough, almost encyclopaedic scholarship that is presented here with clarity and economy.
