Article: EUROPE SETS FOR U.S. NO-SHOWS.(aftermath of September 11 attacks)(Brief Article)

PARIS -- Designer firms in Milan and Paris put on a brave face Wednesday when news spread that several major American retailers plan to skip the runway shows in Europe.

Citing the Gulf War as a historical reference point, they estimated the commercial portion of their audience could be diminished by as much as 20 to 30 percent. Most said they would make provisions so absent retailers can see their collections in other ways, be it on the Internet, CD-ROMs, satellite transmissions or videos dispatched afterward. Missing orders will be recouped by other means, even sending collections to New York after the shows in Europe have ended.
