Every theologian is indebted to British Jesuit Norman Tanner because of his superb editorial work on the two-volume Decrees of the Ecumenical Councils (Georgetown, 1991). These volumes, which print the texts of the councils in their original languages along with facing English translations, should be in the library of every serious theological reader. Tanner's current book can be read as a vade mecum to those volumes because, as the subtitle indicates, it supplies a historical overview of all the major councils, from Nicaea in the early fourth century to Vatican II.
