Even if you don't have a food allergy, you may occasionally have a dinner guest who has one. Or you may wonder what to do if you suspect an allergy in your child. Following are facts about food allergies and experts' ideas on how deal with them.
What are the chief food allergens? Peanuts, tree nuts (including walnuts, pecans, cashews, hazelnuts, almonds, pistachios), fish, shellfish, eggs, milk, soy and wheat. However, any food can cause allergy.
How many food-allergy deaths occur each year? About 150 to 200, by educated estimates. More than 30,000 people are rushed to emergency rooms annually with severe, food-linked allergic reactions.
