Cruise lines are deep in changes and red ink after the Sept. 11 attacks.
Bookings slumped by half at some major lines in the days after the terrorist attacks. When the phone rang at travel agencies or cruise-line offices, it was from people canceling.
Some ships have been mothballed, and one cruise line, Renaissance, went bankrupt in late September as bookings tumbled.
Now, major cruise lines have changed itineraries, pulling ships out of the Eastern Mediterranean (and the Suez Canal) through next spring or summer and adding more cruises in South America, North America, the Caribbean_places perceived as more risk-free.
