Artificial insemination poses risk of AIDS virus infection
If you are one of the thousands of women undergoing artificial insemination this year, it may be easier to find out whether your semen donor plays the cello than whether he is infected with the AIDS virus.
About 172,000 women underwent artificial insemination last year, resulting in about 65,000 births, according to a report by the congressional Office of Technology Assessment (OTA). About half of those babies were conceived using semen from anonymous donors, and the other half were conceived using semen from the mother's husband or regular sexual partner.
