The author, Professor of Russian History in the University of London, has set himself a mammoth task: to describe the history of Russia from its beginnings to the present day. With increasing specialisation readers genuinely interested in history often find it difficult to find one book which tackles large subjects yet they are not anxious to tackle a wide variety of narrow studies.
