Oct. 23--Marathon negotiations between BART and its professional employees union continued all day Monday and into the evening as the strike deadline -- 12:01 a.m. today -- threatened to strand Bay Area commuters.
BART and Local 3993 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees -- the smallest of the transit system's unions, representing 238 workers -- were unable to reach a compromise during a weekend of talks.
