If the events of the past year do not kill off Halloween, then its opponents are going to have to accept that fact that a 2,000-year-old tradition is simply too tough to die.
Last week, I heard a proposal from some group that we do away with scary Halloween costumes in favor of dressing up like heroes. All well and good. Reports are that kids are making a run on firefighter costumes this year, but not because anyone told them to.
Next year, given the rapidity with which we tend to change our focus, you may see far more ghouls and monsters at your front door than firefighters or cops. That's all well and good, too.
