ELMONT, N.Y. _ When trainer Nick Zito decided to change jockeys on A.P. Valentine after the Kentucky Derby this year, he told people that he was going to find a rider with tons of ability.
Let's see. With Jerry Bailey moving to ride third-place Derby finisher Congaree, with Gary Stevens on Point Given, Pat Day and Jorge Chavez taken, who was available? John Velazquez? Edgar Prado? Chris McCarron?
"You'll see," Zito told everyone. "This rider is really good."
The next day came, and Zito made his announcement. Victor Espinoza would ride A.P. Valentine in the Preakness.
