TAIPEI, Oct 24 Asia Pulse - Taiwan's jobless rate hit a record high of 5.26 per cent in September and is expected to continue to rise in the next three months, the Directorate General of the Budget, Accounting and Statistics (DGBAS) said Tuesday.

DGBAS officials said the number of people who lost their job due to plant closures or scaledowns in September stood at a new high of 245,000, or an increase of 14,000 from the previous month. Most of the jobless are middle-aged or a little older - people who are traditionally the family breadwinners.

The officials, therefore, estimated as many as 1.18 million individuals may be affected by the jobless situation. ...
